CARROWKEEL, CO. SLIGO

Discovery map # 25

Only 3 cairns are available as viewing platforms; B, G and K. All other cairns are in ruinous condition. You should make your first stop the Arrow Community Enterprise Centre, at Castlebaldwin Village. Its only approximately 20 miles South of Sligo Town on the N4 road and is overlooked by the cairns to the west of the centre. Inside you'll find very helpful and resourceful staff. The Centre is run by Manager Roisin McGlone and they have extensive guides to the cairns, to nature walks and other local sites of heritage interest. In hiking up to Carrowkeel remember that the area is a limestone landscape subject to numerous swallow holes. One of these holes, between L and M cairns is big enough to make a bus load of politicians disappear (hmm). Most of these holes are hidden under bog and heather. If you've ever walked on heather you'll know its springy, like a matress, underfoot. So my advice is to stick to the numerous sheep paths that crisscross the ridges on these hilltops. I mean, lets face it, when was the last time you saw a sheep dangling precariously over the edge of a swallow hole!!?

Times, azimuths etc for the Moon are for moonbeams to hit the back wall of the end chamber, so therefore arrive 3/4 hour early to catch its light moving along the left side passageway as you face in.

Cairn G

Summer Solstice Sunset

Since this is a standstill position for the sun, the times and reference points vary little in latitude.Times shown are for the last phases of sunlight as it strikes the left orthostat (as you look into the cairn) before the end recess inside the cairn. Therefore to view the whole light show be there about 1/2 hour before.

Cairn K

Castor, in Gemini

Because we are viewing a stellar alignment here, the variation in altitude and azimuth is much less than solar or lunar objects.
