Carndonagh Cross & Pillars, Iveagh Peninsula, Co. Donegal
Location :
18 miles N of Buncrana on the R 244 road. The cross is found
beside the Church of Ireland church at the top of a hill overlooking
the town of Carndonagh itself. Not signposted.
Features :
The cross itself is unpierced of which I show here the west face
showing more beautiful interlacings and the 2 side pillars with
human figures in relief. The stones are fashioned
out of red sandstone. There is also a pillar stone (bottom pic) behind the cross
inside the Church of Ireland church grounds. It has a rose or
petal-leafed wheel cross and stem on its west face.
Date :
Possibly 7th. century A.D.
