High Crosses,Castlekeeran, Co. Meath


Location : Approx. 2.5 miles W from Kells town off the R163 Oldcastle / Kells road, across a farmyard and over a field stile. Signposted.
Features : This is Ciaran's hermitage by the Blackwater river. There are 3 undecorated (unfinished?) pierced ring high crosses, some grave-slab stones and a good example of an Ogham stone bearing the inscription 'COVAGNI MAQI MUCOI LUGUNI'. Ogham stones were the first example of a written Irish language.
Date : possible 12th. century A.D.
