Dysert O' Dea Cross, Co. Clare


Location : About 2.5 miles S of Corrofin on the R 476 road to Ennis. Signposted.
Features : St. Tola's High cross, made of limestone, lies in a field to the east of the old church and round tower. On the east face (left photo) we have the crucifixion and the bishop Tola underneath in relief. The west face (right photo) is given over to geometric design and the lozenge, an old sun symbol, is used for the center piece. Note no sun wheel supports the cross arms. On the south (bottom left photo) and north sides (bottom right photo) are interlacing incorporating viking influenced designs.
Date : 12th. century A.D.
