 Jerpoint Cistercian Abbey

Jerpoint Abbey Carvings Pt. 1 , Co. Kilkenny


Location : Found in Kilkenny town itself. First left turn( from North) over bridge straddling the river Nore. Signposted.
Features : This is a Cistercian abbey with fine granite carvings throughout its grounds. The top picture shows a knight pillar behind a relief of a monk with hood. The middle photo shows some sculptured abbot effigy. The middle panel in the bottom picture shows an angel cradling a child and to the left a figure holding a sword, to the far right a figure yielding a cross staff.
Date : Abbey is 1158 A.D.Stone sarcophagi and wall panels 13th. - 15th. century.
