St. Patrick's Cross, Co. Meath


Location : In Kells town centre, at the top of a hill. Look for the 100ft. round stone tower. Signposted.
Features : St. Colum Cille founded this monastery about 805 A.D. Here are the remains of the cross of St. Patrick and two broken crosses. On this page is St. Patrick's cross. On the west face (bottom left photo) is Christ triumphant within a pierced ring with the 'Agnus dei ' (Lamb of God) above him. Below that the crucifixion and a worn out panel underneath. On the east face (top photo) 7 bosses lie in the centre with the miracle of the loaves and fishes at the very top. Daniel in the lions' den is just below the 7 bosses. Underneath this is possibly a scene from hell? then the last 2 panels show Cain and Abel and Adam and Eve and an interlacing. The north face (bottom right photo) shows detailed vine like scrolling.
