Miscellaneous Crosses
Location :
Seems to be somwhere W of the Naas dual carriageway around
Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Not certain of location.
Features :
This huge unpierced ring cross is the largest I've come across
so far. It lies inside an abandoned small graveyard which has
the remains of a small old chapel. It was precariously tilted when
I took this shot so its probably fallen down at this stage. There
appear to be no carvings on its surfaces. It has a central boss as
a representation of the Greek Omphalos (navel of the earth)
on its sunwheel and a boss on its shaft.
Date :
Because of its unpierced ring and no carvings I date it about
8th. - 9th. century A.D.
