After the cruise I ventured North just outside Taupo to see some
definitely unique areas. Firstly , a stop at the Volcanic Activity centre.(see below)
This observatory keeps track of the very active volcanoes on the
North Island and you'll see excellent interactive displays inside.
A history of seimic activity and eruptions can be found all around the
centre for the price of a small admission fee.
Here is a wall photo of the 3 main North Island volcanoes, Tongariro
to the foreground, Ngauruhoe in the middle and Ruapehu to the back.
Not shown is Taranaki some 80 miles away from this group, which is
more or less on the same fault line. You can also hire out an experienced
knowledgeable guide, for a price, for an educational tour in the area.
Craters of the Moon Scenic Reserve
Run by the Department of Conservation (DOC) this is one thermal
area that you should not miss. Its located about 5 kms (3 miles)
north of Taupo on hwy. 1. For one thing, it's completely free and
at the end of your self tour you're encouraged to donate to the upkeep
of the reserve. Many visitors do. There is a nice gift shop at the
entrance where you get tickets and two things you should know
as you enter the tour is that the sunken valley you're entering is
a mass of steam and hot rock, so its hot regardless of the weather
conditions, and two, yes, there is the smell of rotten eggs again but
the wind usually blows it away quickly.
